Nurse Licensure Compact
The Public Policy Committee is seeking our Chapter's support in an inaugural letter writing campaign supporting the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). This grassroots campaign is the first time CMSA has taken such an action. Multi-State Licensure is an issue of importance for all our members, especially as health care delivery continues to change with the use of the Internet, Telemedicine and Call Centers to support efforts to serve a mobile population. In these instances, Nurse Case Managers are practicing across State lines and are required by law to be licensed in each State in which their patients need care, not where the Nurse lives. This current practice leaves the individual Nurse Case Manager in an ethical and/or legal conflict with their professional license on the line and at personal financial risk. This is a particularly important issue in the States where no legislation is currently being considered; hence, case managers lack protection afforded by the Compact. On behalf of the CMSA Board of Directors, and the CMSA Public Policy Committee, I respectfully ask you to participate in our grassroots campaign.
CMSA's goal is to seek a mutual recognition of nurse licensures within all States and remove regulatory barriers to increase access to safe nursing care. Therefore, we ask for your assistance in rolling out phase one of this very important letter writing campaign.
Simply sign the template letter and include a copy of the Position Statement and CMSA Description and forward copies to those indicated on the bottom of the template letter. Our goal is to reach the Executive Directors in each State of Board Nursing for those states not yet participating.
If you have any questions, the CMSA Public Policy Committee will be happy to assist you. We hope that we can count on your assistance in this groundbreaking grassroots letter writing campaign for CMSA. Your participation will help the above regulators recognize that CMSA is the voice of case managers!
